UV eye
protection
UV eye protection is essential to
protect your eyes from the sun. UV stands for Ultraviolet
Radiation, invisible rays radiating from the sun to the
earth. These rays from the sun can severely damage your
eyes, as well as your skin. They are the main
cause of eye cancer and eyesight loss.
Some scientist believe that exposure
to UV can cause cataracts in the long run. To be precise, there
are three different kinds of UV ray: UVA, UVB and UVC.
It’s mainly the UVB that causes the damage to your eyes and
skin. To protect your eyes the best you should find sunglasses
that provide at least 98% protection. The UV radiation needs to
be absorbed by the lenses, so they wont reach your
eyes.
For skiing, people with sun
intolerance and with generally sensitive eyes can find custom
sunglasses available to suit their needs. However, staring into
the sun still isn’t a very good idea, even with
sunglasses.
Special chemicals are used to coat the
lenses of your sunglasses, to reflect away the UV
rays and let the good light through. It is not necessarily true
that darker lenses protect your eyes from the sun better than
light-colored lenses can, contrary to popular belief.
Though the darker shades help, what is most important is which
chemicals are used to coat the glasses and stop the UV rays
from passing through.
UV eye protection has become an
important, almost necessary element in all forms of eyeglasses,
from prescription to sunglasses to motorcycle glasses, to
tanning goggles and safety goggles.
